On Wednesday Nov. 1st, No. 2 seed St. John Fisher University womens’ soccer faced off against No. 6 seed Alfred University in the Empire 8 semi-finals. Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Byrnes had a perfect game, making one save en route to a shutout.
Just a few days later, the No. 1 seeded Fisher battled the No. 2 seeded Hartwick to bring home the Empire 8 Championship. The Hartwick Hawks took a 2-0 lead with goals in the second and third quarter. The Cardinals fought back with a goal of their own in the third quarter. Junior Sarah Woods fought past Hartwick defenders to make her first goal of the season. Freshman Mary Kate McPhee took charge offensively taking four shots, with three on the goal. Senior goalkeeper Sophia Trozzi made 10 saves, while junior Claire Dearie made a defensive save of her own. The 2-1 loss was Fisher’s first against a conference opponent since last year’s Empire 8 semi-finals.
