The Little Theatre is a nonprofit movie theater in Rochester, New York, that screens American independent, classic, and foreign films. The theater is equipped with five screens, a concession stand, and a café with occasional live music. The Little Theatre just celebrated its 96th birthday and 96th year of showing films to the Rochester community. Located just five miles from St John Fisher University, with $8 student tickets, visiting The Little is the perfect night out!
Just this weekend, I visited The Little Theatre three nights in a row. This fall, The Little hosted “Spooky Season” by screening iconic and classic horror films. On Saturday, I saw “Sinners” (2025); on Sunday, I watched “Eyes Without a Face” (1960); and on Monday, I attended the screening of “Scream 2” (1997). Each film was shown on screen one, the largest theater at The Little. Before every screening, an employee at The Little gave a short introduction of the film, the theater, fun facts, and jokes. Each night, the audience cheered for the speaker and clapped after the film, often sticking around to discuss it. Attending The Little is a great community experience and a chance to indulge in film while expanding your horizons. Each night, I was so excited to go back for more.
The Little Theatre is located in downtown Rochester, surrounded by popular cafes, shops, and restaurants. Visiting The Little is a great opportunity to experience downtown Rochester and make a day of it. My recommendation? Visit Albunn Coffee House, shop at Parkleigh, eat at The Little Café and then see a movie at The Little Theatre!
In the 21st century, many movie theaters are struggling due to the influx of streaming services. The Little offers commodities you would never get through services like Netflix and Hulu. It screens foreign and independent films that would be hard to find at home. But the most important feature is the community experience that you don’t get watching a film at home or at a chain theater. If you are interested in film or just love movies, visiting a non-profit and community-oriented theater such as The Little is a great way to show your support for the industry and keep independent theaters thriving.
