The St. John Fisher University men’s lacrosse team enters the 2025 season with high expectations, aiming for their sixth consecutive Empire 8 Conference Championship and a deep run in the NCAA Division III Tournament. After a remarkable 2024 season that saw the Cardinals reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history, the team is poised to build on that success.
Season Overview:
The Cardinals commenced their 2025 campaign with a non-conference matchup against Haverford College on Feb. 15 at the Pinnacle Athletic Campus and Events Center in Victor, NY. The Cardinals won 9-7 with a complete shutout in the 4th quarter behind the performance of junior goalie Tyler Manning, who was also named the Empire 8 Player of the Week.
Following the opener, Fisher faces a challenging schedule, including games against Ithaca College, St. Lawrence University, and Colorado College. Empire 8 play begins on March 22, with the Cardinals aiming to extend their conference winning streak.
Currently ranked 15th in the nation, the Cardinals hope to build off their momentum from their first win of the season.
Expectations:
Fisher’s men’s lacrosse team has high expectations this season, aiming to win the Empire 8 Conference and make a deep run in the national championship. With a strong roster, talented coaching staff, and a history of success, the Cardinals are focused on dominating their competition. They have been putting in the hard work during practice and are determined to prove themselves on the field. Their goal is not just to win the conference but to compete at the highest level on the national stage.
“The goal is to be playing meaningful lacrosse in May, we have a chance to do something special,” said Senior Captain Braeden McNeill.
The men’s lacrosse team is more than just a team; they’re a family. They have a strong bond built through hard work, trust, and a shared love for the game. Whether they’re on the field, in the locker room, or spending time together outside of lacrosse, they support each other like brothers. This close connection helps them play as one unit, giving them the confidence and chemistry they need to compete at the highest level. Their teamwork and trust will be key as they push for a championship this season.
“We are a tight-knit group. We look after each other and I believe we are as tight as any team in the country,” Senior Captain Colin Blakeslee said.
The Cardinals are nationally recognized, holding the No. 14 spot in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) preseason poll and No. 15 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason rankings.
Coaching Leadership:
Under the guidance of head coach Dave Dobbins, now in his eighth season with the Cardinals, the team has compiled an impressive 84-36 record. Dobbins has been instrumental in the program’s growth and success, including the historic NCAA Quarterfinals appearance in 2024.
Looking Ahead:
With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, the Cardinals are well-positioned to continue their dominance in the Empire 8 Conference and make a significant impact on the national stage. Fans can look forward to an exciting season as St. John Fisher University men’s lacrosse strives for excellence in 2025.
