St. John Fisher College plans to hold in-person commencement ceremonies to celebrate Spring 2021 graduates on Thursday, May 6, through Saturday May 8.

“Planning this year has been more challenging because we are waiting for guidelines from the state,” said Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Matha Thornton. The current plans for commencement adhere to the New York State health and safety guidance.

According to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office:

Outdoor Events:

  • Large-scale ceremonies of over 500 people at outdoor venues will be limited to 20 percent of capacity, applicable to venues with a total capacity of 2,500 or more.
  • Medium-scale ceremonies of 201-500 people at outdoor venues will be limited to 33 percent of capacity.
  • Small-scale ceremonies of up to 200 people or 2 attendees per student at outdoor venues will be limited to 50 percent of capacity. Proof of recent negative test result or proof of completed immunization is optional.

Indoor Events:

  • Large-scale ceremonies of over 150 people at indoor venues will be limited to 10 percent of capacity, applicable to venues with a total capacity of 1,500 or more.
  • Medium-scale ceremonies of 101-150 people at indoor venues will be limited to 33 percent of capacity.
  • Small-scale ceremonies of up to 100 people or 2 attendees per student at indoor venues will be limited to 50 percent of capacity. Proof of recent negative test result or proof of completed immunization is optional.

There will be seven ceremonies throughout three days held in the fieldhouse on campus and attendance will be limited to graduates only. Graduates will be required to complete a COVID-19 test before their scheduled ceremony. In addition, there will be live streams and recordings available for families, friends, faculty and staff that are interested in viewing.

The commencement ceremonies schedule goes as follows:

Thursday, May 6

3 p.m. – Wegmans School of Nursing
7 p.m. – Wegmans School of Nursing

Friday, May 7

9 a.m. – Baccalaureate Mass
1 p.m. – Wegmans School of Pharmacy

Saturday, May 8

Furthermore, members of the Class of 2020 have been surveyed regarding their interest in an in-person celebration.

“Once we complete the planning for our current graduates then we are going to talk about how we can celebrate our 2020 graduates,” said Thornton. More information regarding that plan will be announced as it comes.
