Love horror? Don’t know what to watch this season? Then this list is specially curated for you! Whether you like an autumn aesthetic, a gothic ambiance, female horror, musicals, something absolutely insane, or even a film from Japan, it’s listed here for you!
1) Sleepy Hollow (1999)

“Constable Ichabod Crane is sent to the tiny village of Sleepy Hollow, where a headless horseman is leaving a trail of decapitated bodies.” (Google)
Sleepy Hollow, directed by Tim Burton, is a film based on the 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” one of many adaptations. The film beautifully captures a gothic autumnal ambiance, making it the perfect watch for the Halloween season.
2) Ginger Snaps (2000)

“The story of two outcast sisters, Ginger and Brigitte, in the mindless suburban town of Bailey Downs. On the night of Ginger’s first period, she is savagely attacked by a wild creature. Ginger’s wounds miraculously heal but something is not quite right.” (Letterboxd)
Ginger Snaps is a female body horror film. Again, this film embraces the fall aesthetic. Think Jennifer’s Body (2009), and change it from vampires to werewolves.
3) May (2002)

“A socially awkward veterinary assistant with a lazy eye and obsession with perfection descends into depravity after developing a crush on a boy with perfect hands.” (Letterboxd)
May is an insane female horror film that follows May’s daily life, starting out normally and slowly progressing to insanity. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before and once again captures a perfect fall vibe.
4) House (1977)

“Hoping to find a sense of connection to her late mother, Gorgeous takes a trip with her friends to visit her aunt’s ancestral house in the countryside. The girls soon discover that there is more to the old house than meets the eye.” (Letterboxd)
House is a Japanese film from the ‘70s filled with beautiful colors and crazy special effects. It blends fantasy with horror and is weird, unique and extremely fun.
5) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

“The legendary tale of a barber who returns from wrongful imprisonment to 1840s London, bent on revenge for the rape and death of his wife, and resumes his trade while forming a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett.” (IMDb)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a horror musical based on the Broadway show of the same name. Similar to Sleepy Hollow (1999), this film is directed by Tim Burton, stars Johnny Depp and captures the gothic aesthetic.
6) Videodrome (1983)

“In a bid to boost ratings, a programmer for a trashy cable channel broadcasts a hyper-violent torture show called Videodrome. Whilst trying to uncover its origins, he goes on a hallucinatory journey into a shadow world of conspiracy, sadomasochism and bodily transformation.” (MUBI)
Videodrome is weird, uncomfortable and not for the average viewer. While being a horror film, it dives into heavy topics. It blends hallucination with reality, creating a unique and complex cinematic experience.
7) mother! (2017)

“A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.” (Letterboxd)
mother! is once again an insane female horror film starring Jennifer Lawrence that bewilders your sense of reality through the concept of motherhood and marriage from the female perspective.
8) Fresh (2022)

“Frustrated by scrolling dating apps only to end up on lame, tedious dates, Noa takes a chance by giving her number to the awkwardly charming Steve after a produce-section meet-cute at the grocery store.” (Letterboxd)
This film feels as if a classic rom-com suddenly took a really dark, twisted and hungry turn.
9) Battle Royale (2000)

“In the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill each other under the revolutionary ‘Battle Royale’ act.” (Letterboxd)
Imagine The Hunger Games (2012), but made in 2000s Japan and way more gruesome.
10) Together (2025)

“With a move to the countryside already testing the limits of a couple’s relationship, a supernatural encounter begins an extreme transformation of their love, their lives and their flesh.” (Letterboxd)
Similar to Fresh (2022), this film starts as a romance drama and slowly progresses into madness, mixing relationship struggles with body horror. Debuting just this year, Together deserved a lot more love! If you missed it in theaters, this fall season is a great opportunity to check it out.
