On Nov. 7, 2024, the Student Government Association (SGA) announced a partnership with the Wegmans School of Pharmacy to offer lockers to commuter students. Commuters were asked to fill out an interest form and were told that while there is a limited number of lockers, SGA would do their best to accommodate as many students as possible.
Although the idea of commuter lockers has been floating around for some time now, it received a boost when Brooke Chase took over as president. “This idea was discussed with the previous SGA Administration, former President Jenna Vinoya and Vice President Maddie Bowen,” Chase said “During our transition meetings, this idea came up and I wanted to carry it through.”
The initiative itself, while student-led, has been supported by the staff and faculty of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy. Chase specifically mentioned the support of Jennifer Adams, who is an Administrative Assistant in the Pharmacy School. “She has been a great support during this process and has been working to help students with their lockers. We could not have completed this project without her help,” Chase explained.
While Commuter Council was not involved in the initiative, members of the club have discussed the idea in their meetings. Chloe Kremer, Commuter Council President and Senator of Commuter Students, conveyed the excitement commuters had about the lockers.
“It’s difficult when you can’t just go back to your room and grab something that you need, so having a space where you can keep some stuff is a great thing for commuter students,” said Kremer.
Chase is optimistic about how initiatives like this will “ensure that commuters feel welcomed and included in our campus community.”
The lockers are located on the second floor of the Pharmacy School and have built-in combination locks. SGA has yet to officially receive any formal concerns about the lockers or their location. However, the lockers aren’t centrally located, which could make them a bit inconvenient to access between classes.
Given that the lockers aren’t able to be relocated, additional storage may need to be provided in a more convenient area in the future. This has been discussed in Commuter Council meetings. “As for other ideas, we have always talked about wanting a space for commuters whether that is a lounge, study area, etc. This would not be anything we could directly implement, but we can advocate for it and ask other students to as well,” said Kremer.
While there is still work to be done to better support commuter students, Chase is optimistic about how initiatives like this will “ensure that commuters feel welcomed and included in our campus community.”
For those with additional questions or initiatives related to commuters, both Kremer and Chase recommend attending the weekly senate meetings at 7 p.m. in Wilson Formal. The end of each session is reserved for students to address any concerns or share ideas. Kremer also recommends attending Commuter Council meetings and events, which are announced via email when students join through the Cardinal Hub.
