Social Media for young people has never been as important to the marketing industry as it is right now, according to Mike Thomas, a St. John Fisher University alum who now works in the industry. The event, hosted by the American Marketing Association (AMA), highlighted how important branding and strategic content creation is in increasing engagement and revenue in today’s fast-paced market.
Thomas, CEO of Thomas Media Group and creator of the podcast, “In Good Company,” appeared at St. John Fisher’s AMA meeting to celebrate day two of marketing week.
The 2011 marketing communications graduate reflected on his career journey, noting the significance of creativity and resourcefulness in developing an online brand.
Thomas discussed how individuals and businesses can effectively build their brand presence online with the right tools and mindset. “You don’t have to wait to do something that you are called to do now … you have your phone, ideas, and resources,” he said.
AMA Marketing Director, Carlee Elliot, discussed how she brainstorms ideas. “My main strategy for brainstorming is just scrolling on TikTok for ideas that I can build off of,” she said.
Elliot asked AMA President, Johnny Aiello, what his thoughts were on why TikTok and social media became relevant in marketing.
“Social media acts as a new tool businesses can use to connect with new audiences to drive up engagement, resulting in larger profits,” Aiello explained.
Thomas stated that every aspiring marketer has the potential to make an impact. His session provided practical insights and actionable advice, encouraging students to leverage social media to connect with their audiences and enhance their marketing efforts.
