Heading into a career fresh out of college can be daunting for soon-to-be graduates. However, two St. John Fisher University alumni insisted, at a recent panel, that it’s not as scary as you might imagine.
“I know I was scared beyond belief,” said Anastasia Lach, a speaker at Fisher’s AMA (American Marketing Association) Marketing Professionals Panel. “I was nervous if I was gonna get a job.”
Despite the nerves, Lach landed a job as an inside sales representative with Edwards Vacuum. “It all works out the way that it’s supposed to,” she said.
Early on in her new role, Lach jokingly mentioned that she struggled to spell “vacuum” correctly. As time went on, she became more comfortable in her workplace and even presented lessons to her coworkers on how to use AI.
The event’s second speaker, Brendan Evans, got his start as a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual. “It’s not something to look down at, it’s something to look forward to,” Evans said, referring to how students should look at life after school.
Building connections, using LinkedIn and maintaining a work-life balance were the top tips Lach and Evans stressed to the students.
Johnny Aiello, who serves as club president for AMA, was happy with the success of his event and took lessons from the speakers to heart. “It’s special to learn and know that it’s gonna be okay, and here [are] some things we can do now to prepare ourselves for that,” he said.
