The 65th Annual Grammy Awards took place Sunday night in Los Angeles. The night consisted of many historic victories, while also receiving backlash from viewers at home for snubbing some artists. Here are the highlights and disappointments from the night. 

Dubs:

Beyoncé made history for the most Grammy wins of all time. Her four wins for Best R&B Song, Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronic Album, and Best Traditional R&B Performance put her at 32 total awards. 

Kim Petras made history as the first transgender woman to win a Grammy for Best Pop Duo with Sam Smith for their song ‘Unholy.’ It is also Sam Smith’s first Grammy since coming out as non-binary. 

Viola Davis earned a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album. This award makes her the third Black woman to achieve EGOT status (having an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards).

Samara Joy became the 10th Black woman in history to win the Best New Artist award. 

Lizzo took home the Record of the Year award for her song ‘About Damn Time,’ making her a four-time Grammy Award winner. 

Taylor Swift took home the Best Music Video award for ‘All Too Well: The Short Film.’

Harry Styles’ ‘Harry’s House’ won the award for Album of the Year. 

Snubs

Viewers felt that this year’s awards snubbed a few artists for their achievements. Fans took to Twitter to voice their disappointment.

Many Swift fans were upset by the high viewer numbers that Swift’s presence at the show brought, yet her only win of the night was not televised.

the one award she did win wasn’t even announced live. they had the audacity to put her on screen every other shot because she is the most supportive artist, always the first standing, always dancing and cheering, and they couldn’t even give her an award on-screen.

Fans were shocked that Styles won Album of the Year for ‘Harry’s House’ over Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance.’ Styles also received backlash during his acceptance speech when he said “this doesn’t happen to people like me very often.” 

Viewers argued that things like this (receiving awards) happen to people like Styles, a white, cisgender man, more than any other group of people.

Other users saw his statement differently, speculating that Styles could have been referring to his upbringing.

There were 12.4 million viewers tuned into the award show on Sunday night, a 30% increase from last year. While it’s pretty typical for the Grammy’s to leave some viewers disappointed, the night had many historic takeaways. Many artists who dominated the charts in 2022 were recognized, and there were plenty of red carpet looks served from artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Camilla Cabello, Doja Cat, Cardi B, Bebe Rexha, Queen Latifah and more.
